Paionia

Paionia (Paionia) – Ancient area after the middle course of the r. Axius (Vardar) and the pool of R. Astibo (Bregalnica) and the state of the Paionians (first half of ⅳ c. – ok. 230 G. BC). It is first mentioned in Homer’s Iliad. First map of Paionia (in various time periods) known Paione King is Agis (up to 359 BC). From the Paion rulership dynasty, Likea, Patata, Aban, Ariston, Leon and dropion are also known. Its greatest settlement, and perhaps the capital was the city of Vilazora, who was probably on the site Gradiste near the village. Prince, Svetilosko. Paionia acknowledged the supreme power of Philip ⅱ Macedonian (358 BC). Later (ok. 230 BC) The southern parts of Paionia fell under direct Macedonian power, and the northern parts under the government of Dardanians. Paionic cavalry participated in the campaign of Alexander ⅲ Macedonian to the east.
