Gjurjev, Branislav

Gjurjev, Branislav (Sremski Karlovci, Vojvodina, 4. ⅷ 1908 – Novi Sad, 26. 1993) – Historian and osmanist, full-time member of the Vojvojija Academy of Sciences and Arts and Member of MANU outside of the working composition (25. ⅻ 1969) . As a student in history and oriental philology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, he was a member of the CPY (1929) and the Secretary of the University Organization of the SCOY (1933-1934). After graduation (1934) he attended postgraduate studies in Constantinople (December 1937 – December 1938). After returning he was employed as a curator trainee in the Turkish archive earthen (from April 1939). He received his doctorate at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade on the topic “What was the power of Roman burning”. At the time of World War II was captive in Germany. After the liberation, he was a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo in the history of the peoples of the SFRY in the Ottoman period and an introduction to historical science. He was the initiator for the establishment and first director of the Oriental Institute in Sarajevo and raised the SP. “Attachments for Oriental Filology” and the collection “Monumentation Turkica Historiam Slavum Merdionallium Illustration”. He was president of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of BiH (1968-1971), and later moved to Novi Sad (late 1979), where he was a regular member of the Vojvodina Academy of Sciences and Arts.
