Ecotoxicology, aquatic

Ecotoxicology, aquatic – science that studies the potential effects of pollutants on water ecosystems. This scientific area is in constant rise and its results have an increasing importance for the economy, legal regulation and the numerous environmental organizations. It is an interdisciplinary science, which includes ecology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and chemistry. Studies aim to better familiarize the hazardous effects of pollution on a different level of the biological organization – from a cell to an ecosystem, to develop biomonitoring techniques in the aquatic ecosystems and provide proper risk assessments and hazardous effects. Such research in Macedonia are present from the 90s of the 20th century within the programs for protection of the three major natural lakes (Ohrid, Prespa and Dojran Lake). D. R.-Z.
