Bulgarian Exarchy

Bulgarian Exarchate – Autonomous Orthodox Church (1870-1953). At 28. ⅱ 1870 The Sultan screed was issued for the creation of the Bulgarian Exarchate based in Constantinople. In the Exarchate, all dioceses from Bulgaria, the Veles Diocese from Macedonia and two dioceses from Serbia. Viewing Metropolitan Antim (16. 1872) was selected for Exarch. The Exarchate was regulated according to the Constitution of 1871. In Art. 10 of the Ferman was envisaged by joining the Exarcience of Orthodox believers if 2/3 declared it. Due to the spread of the Exarchate outside of the ethnic borders of Bulgaria, the Ecumenical Patriarchate convened a church-based Council in Constantinople and declared the Exarchate for Razzmic Church (16. IX 1872). Under the Schisma Exarchate remained until 1953. For the first exarchical bishop in Macedonia, at the helm of the Veles Diocese, he was enthroned Archimandrite Damaskin (1 ⅴ 1872). After the elections (23. 1874), two more Berer for new bishops in Macedonia were issued – for the Ohrid Diocese headed by the Metropolitan Nathanael Doumeski and the Skopje Diocese at the helm with Metropolitan Dorotheus. At the beginning of the Russian-Ottoman war (1877), the Exarchian bishops from Macedonia were persecuted. The Prolussian Exarch antim was replaced by the Hunter Metropolitan Joseph. The new exarch did not have a boldness to travel to Constantinople, and the exarchy of up to 1880. He ruled his deputy as the Archimandrite Metodi Metodij Kusev (IC) from Prilep. After improving the Ottoman-Bulgarian relations, the Exarch Joseph stopped at the helm of the Exarchate. In the last decade of ⅹⅰⅹ c., The Exarchate made new Bulgarian bishops in Macedonia in the Ohrid, Skopje, Veles (1894), Pelagonia (Bitola), Strumica, Debar-Kicevo and Neurocopic Diocese (1897). After the Balkan wars the headquarters of the Exarchate was moved to Sofia. After the death of Exarch Joseph (1915), the Bulgarian Exarchate was governed by the Holy Synod, headed by the president of the Synod. After the Second World War, New Bulgarian Exarch – Sofia Metropolitan Stefan (10. 1945) was elected, and after his death, the Third Churchous Council (1953) Bulgarian Exarchate was erected in the rank of Patriarchate.
