Paiones

Payonians (Paionnes) – Pale-Balkan population of Indo-European origin, close to Brigates. The ethnonym has a aggregate character, common for more tribes. In addition to the Paionians, the Paionian tribes included: Aggrianians, Astras, Dernons, Doberer, Ioroi, Laiay, Pajori and Syropianians. Lived around the flow of r. Axius (Vardar) and stream spiders: a) Spider Crestach, b) Home spider, c) Water Spider MES (Struma), on the space between them, along the rivers Bargala (Bregalnica) and Pont (Strumica). Their territory in the north extended to the sources of the R. Strimon, west to Pelagonia and south to the Aegean Sea. In the expansion of the Macedonian kingdom in the north, they were squeezed from some of the southern territories. In ⅴ c. BC They lived around the middle and upper course of Axius and the upper stream. It is from that period and we learn about Paionian tribes Agriani and Laiay. Mythological data for them coin The laias list several genealical lines: according to Homer, their leader Asteropay was the son of Pelagon and grandson of Axius and Periberia, according to Herodotus, were descendants of the Kroy’s pockets, and, according to Strabon, relatives with Frigates.
