The Ombudsman of the Republic of Macedonia (Ombudsman) – A body for protection of citizens’ rights. This body protects the constitutional and legal rights of citizens when violated by the state administration bodies and other bodies and organizations performing public authorizations. The Ombudsman is elected by the Parliament of the Republic of Macedonia for eight years, with the right to another choice. With the constitutional amendments since 2001 This body received new competencies in the area of protection of citizens from discrimination in relation to the relevant and equitable representation of members of minority communities in the state authorities, bodies in the units of local self-government and public institutions and services. During 2000 This body reviewed 2,238 items, submitted by over 3,000 citizens. From the submitted requests, the Ombudsman examined 1,566 cases. Of these, 956 or 61.05% were rejected as unfounded requirements, and in 552 or 35.25% violations of the constitutional and legal rights of the citizens were noted.
