St. George

“St. George” – Church in the locality Upper Kozjak (Shtip), directly to the walls of the determined ancient city of Bargala. It is built of river stone and mortar, using proportions collected from the ruined ancient city. The plan of the building is an inscribed cross in a square basis, with a trapezoidal apse and a goreped space. Later to the southern side of the narthex was built chapel with a dome. The narthex in the nave is entered through Tribel. In the southern wing of the nave there is a walled rectangular tomb, built at the same time with the Church. There are no specific literary and historical sources for the construction of the Church, but in the Charter of Emperor Vasily ⅱ of 1019. The medieval settlement Kozjak is mentioned, such as an exoric center within the Morozhovcje Bishopric. The walls of the church is fresco painting in three layers. The first is most likely from ⅺ-ⅹⅰⅰ, and the last of ⅹⅴⅰⅰⅰ-ⅹⅳ c. On this period belongs to the character of Jesus Christ antiphonitis, painted on the Northwest Pilaster. It is considered that the metrical composition painted south of the front door, the western wall of the door, originated from ⅹⅳ c. Several painters have participated in the painting, whose names are not known. Around the Church extends a great medieval necropolis. It was concluded that it was in use somewhere from ⅶ, to the first decades of ⅹⅹ c. Lit.: K.
