Sengor, Leopold Sarar (Leopold Setar Sengor) (Joal, 9. 1906 – Paris, 20. ⅹⅰⅰ 2001) – Senegalese poet and statesman, writes in French. From 1960 to 1980 he was chairman of Senegal. With his poetic collections, he advocated the dignity of the black man, his rights and freedom. His poetry is sensual, elegant, nostalgic, influenced by Paul Claudel, Saint-John Pers and the troubadour poetry. It calls great importance to the musimality of the verse, and the monotonous rhythm, similar to African Melos, gives an exceptional authentic virtue of his verses. The compilator is the anthology of the new black and Malago Poetry written in French, the Black Orpheus (1948), for which the preface did Jean-Paul Sartre. In 1975 He received the Golden Wreath of the SVP. BIB.: Songs of darkness (1945), black predominant (1948), Nocturne (1961), letters from the IVERNMENT (1972). Lit.: Aco Shopov, Dials of a nation and a civilization, “poetry”, ZID Nm, 1975. P. Gil.
