MESSEL, Franca (Cervegignan, Slovenia, 25. ⅺ 1894 – TURKAK, 4. ⅴ 1945) – Slovenian art historian, art critic and UNIV. Professor. The high school finished in Ljubljana, then studied history of art in Vienna and Zagreb and PhD at Charles University in Prague. As a curator of the Archaeological Museum in Skopje (since 1928), he was elected assistant (1933) and associate professor (1938) at the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje. In the stay in Macedonia, as a art critic, he collaborated in the Skopje Journal of Science and Literature “South Review” (1927), managed archaeological excavations in Suvodol, Bitola (1931-1932) and participated in archaeological excavations in Stobi. After returning to work in Ljubljana (1938), he was an active participant in the liberation front (from 1941), and immediately before the liberation of Ljubljana, he was arrested by the quisling domestic police, and then shot from white-garders.
