Football in Macedonia – the most massive sport in Macedonia. Occurs at the end of HiH and at the beginning of XX c. in larger cities. The first game was played between two teams from the Turkish military school in the yard of Islacane in Idadija in Skopje (Easter 1909). In Bitola, the team of the Consuls defeated the Turkish military garrison with 2: 0 (1911). Football club “Vardar” was founded in Skopje (1912), and later six clubs were formed: SK “Progress” and SK “Macedonia” in Skopje, SK “Obilic” in Bitola, SK “Fiery Iskra” in Prilep, SK “Progress “In Veles and SK” Ljuboten “in Tetovo (1919). Their number gradually increased (1922 – 12, 1927 – 16, 1931 – 30 and 1940 – 51). At first, football was played unorganized (until 1925). The Belgrade Football Seeds (1922 – 1927) was competent for the clubs (1922 – 1927), with Skopje Zupa (since 1923). Subsequently, Skopje football subordination (1927) was established, which included six clubs from Skopje and ten of the other cities. SK “Civic” competed in the first Yugoslav league (1938/39). At the time of the Bulgarian occupation (1941-1944), Skopje football area was organized, and SK “Macedonia” from Skopje played in the elite division of Bulgaria (1941-1943). There were many footballers, of which 52 were killed and four were declared folk heroes. After the liberation, football sections in sports associations were formed, and they soon grew into special clubs (1948). In Fiso, a football board (from 1946) was functioned, and a football union of Macedonia (1948) was created. Football matches were organized in municipal, regional, republic, in the second and in the first Federal League. The biggest successes had FC “Vardar” from Skopje. The champion of Yugoslavia became: Amateur national team (1967), FC “Mavrovo” – Gostivar (amateur, 1969) and the Student National Association of Skopje (1954).
