Bitola inscription – a significant Macedonian epigraphic monument of 1015-1016, discovered during the demolition of the Bitola Cause Mosque (1956) and is kept in the Bitola Museum. The inscription is carved on a rectangular marble plate and contains a total of twelve rows. Part of the text is damaged, because the plate has long been used as a threshold at the entrance of the mosque. The inscription is written on the occasion of building the Bitola Fortress by Emperor Ivan Vladislav. As an epigraphic monument, it is an important source for the study of the Macedonian Cyrillic alphabet, the Macedonian language and Macedonian history. Paleographic forms of booklay characters show similarity to the letters in other Macedonian epigraphic monuments, such as Samuil’s inscription of 993 and the Voast inscription of 996, as well as with the palemographic characteristics of the oldest Macedonian Cyrillic texts. The language reflects the peculiarities of the Western Macedonian dialect speech and the Macedonian written tradition of that period. The historical data provided by this epigraphic monument in connection with Samuil’s state and the struggle of the Communications against the Byzantine attacks. Lit.: VL.
