Cjic, John

Zvik, John (Loznica, Serbia, 12. 1865 – Belgrade, 16. And 1927) – Serbian geographer, UNIV. Professor, academician. Primary education ended in Loznica, and a gymnasium in Belgrade. He graduated from the Geography Group at the High School in Belgrade (1888). One year he worked as a professor at the Second Belgrade Gymnasium, then departed on a specialization at the University of Vienna, where he received a PhD on the topic “Das Karstihanomen” (1893). The same year he was elected full-time professor at the High School in Belgrade, at first he taught geography and ethnology, and then only geography, more precisely geomorphology. He founded the Geographic Office (1893) and was his manager. He was chairman of the Serbian geographical society, from the formation of Pa “to his death. He was one of the first eight full-time professors at the Belgrade University of his formation (1905), and then he was his rector twice. He was elected a full-time member of the Serbian Royal Academy (1899), and then its president (1921-1927). In addition, he was a correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, a member of Jesz, an honorary doctor of Sorbonne and the University of Prague, an honorary member of several geographical societies in the world and the bearer of English, French and American medal for scientific work. The scientific work of J. C. is rich, substantial and varied. The papers refer to geology, through geomorphology, hydrology, anthropogoography and ethnology, to sociology. He gave such scientific results for the karst, geology, tectonics, glacology and relief in general, which enters the rank of major world scientists. In the anthropogoography, he formed in the world the famous “Cvishka School”. In more papers, geographical issues from Macedonia worked out.
