Struga – city in the southwestern part of the Republic of Macedonia with 16,559 h. (2002). It lies beside the northern coast of Ohrid Lake, at the place where black drim expires from the lake and the flat part of the Struga field, at an altitude of 696 m. It covers an area of 510 ha. The main road M-4 connects the city through Kicevo and Gostivar to Skopje, and the main road M-5 with Ohrid and Bitola. The 7 km from Struga is located Ohrid Airport. The climate is moderate-continental with an average annual air temperature of 10.9 ° C, and an average annual amount of rainfall in Struga 812 mm. Struga is an old fishing settlement from ancient times. The original name and is an enthalon that in translation means eel. The Slavs renamed the Struga which means hunting ground or comes from the word strain which means the passage. Under the name Struga is first mentioned in Byzantine monuments from ⅺ c. He was then visited by the Pathopite Ana Korkena, which the settlement called “City of 100 Bridges”, because at the time of Tsar Samuel was regulated by black Drim, and more bridges were built. At the time of Turkish rule, Struga was known as a grain market, from which it was for Albania. In the area of Panagychurch in Struga twice a year, the famous Struga Fair was held. Between the two world wars, as a border place, it loses former functions in 1931. It lived 3,587 h. The city begins slightly faster to develop in the second half of the last century. Today Struga has a mixed ethnic composition of the population. Most Macedonians (8,901 h.), Followed by Albanians (5293), so Turks (907), Roma (97) and Vlachs (92). Struga is the seat of a municipality that covers an area of 48,300 ha, there is 51 inhabits with 63,376 h. In the economic way the city is a significant resort with more modern hotels and restaurants. The industry present is the textile, the metal and food industry. There is a gymnasium, a health center, a natural History Museum and a modern home of culture, which maintains the international manifestation “Struga Poetry Evenings”. Struga is the birthplace of the Brothers Dimitrija and Konstantin Miladinovci and the academic painter Vangel Kodzoman. In their honor in the city there is a memorial home “Braka Miladinovci” and Fine Gallery “Vangel Kodzoman”. Lit.: N.
