Thessalonian gymnasium

Thessalonian gymnasium – First full gymnasium in Macedonia, founded by the Bulgarian Exarchate, opened in 1881. In Thessaloniki under the name Bulgarian male gymnasium “St. Cyril and Methodius “, although work began in the school year 1879/80. For the first director, the teacher and textbook Kuzman Skarev was appointed, who after just one year, due to a conflict with the Exarchate and its policy, was forced to resign. Full gymnasium becomes in the school year 1885/86 With the opening of ⅶ class. Within the high school, from the school year 1887/88 to 1895/96, a pedagogical department for the preparation of teachers was also worked. This department completed 129 students, mostly from the Bitola Vilet (54). Together with the male, a female gymnasium was opened, which became sixclass in the school year 1890/91. And the male and female gymnasium had their internets (boarding houses). In the period 1885 / 86-1911 / 12 The Thessaloniki (male and female) gymnasium completed about 600 students from Macedonia, including well-known Macedonian revolutionary activists from the time of the national liberation movement. The bulk became teachers. Here teached Grigor Prlicev, Peter Draganov, etc. The Exarchate was particularly interested in the development and work of this high school, the influential factor for realization of its national political interests and pretensions in Macedonia was seen.
