Pepelishte

Pepelist (Negotino) – Medieval necropolis placed on the location of Trych-Street, 2.5 km northeast of Negotino. In 1989 and 1990, B. Babic excavated 76 graves, which included another 9, discovered by accident. The grave structures are cysts of stone slabs and free bury in pits enclosed with river stones, rarely with wooden planks. The deceased are inhumed according to Christian canons. Rings, bracelets, markets, necklaces, pendants, amulet-scroll and glass appliances from ornament for head. Jewelry is a work of local masters, but they meet samples of Byzantine workshops from the end of ⅹ to the beginning of ⅹⅴⅰⅰⅰ with an emphasis on ⅺ and ⅹⅰⅰ c. In two graves, beside the head of the deceased, ceramic vessels were found from ⅹⅰⅰ c. Among the graves were spotted pits with firepres, broken pottery and bones of animals and birds from funeral ritual feasts. North of the necropolis are the remains of the settlement. Litt.: E.
