Horvat, Ivo (1897-1963) – Croatian botanist, founder of the Zagreb Fitocenological School. He graduated and PhD (1920) at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb and was immediately employed. He was elected professor of plant and geobotanics system (1940). Since 1947, until the end of his life he was the head of the Botany Institute at the Veterinary Faculty in Zagreb. Horvat devoted to phytocenological research and mapping of the vegetation of the Balkan Peninsula. He explored the high mountain pastures on the mountains of Macedonia (1935- 1939). Along with H. EM made a Vegetational map of Pelister (1946). His research is published posterly in the epochy work Vegetation Sudsteuropas 1974 (with collaborators). R. R.
