Gornik, Rudolf (Sremsky Mitrovica, Vojvodina, 1. ⅳ 1898 – Zagreb, 1980) – Engineer-agronomist, founder of Tobacco science in the Republic of Macedonia and in Yugoslavia, especially in the field of selection. He graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture in Prague (1923). Together with other colleagues, the administration of state monopolies initiated the opening of the first experimental station for improving the quality of tobacco in Prilep. The Ministry accepted the initiative and the first Balkan tobacco station in Prilep was opened in Prilep (1924), where he became a trustee (1928), while when she grew into a Tobacco Institute (1936) he became his director (1936-1939). He then left for the head of the state monopoly for tobacco in Belgrade. After the liberation, he was also director of the Tobacco Institute in Prilep (1946-1954), and then the working life ended as director of the Tobacco Institute in Zagreb. He gave a special contribution to the modernization of tobacco production and in the survey of new varieties eligible for the Macedonian region. As a result of that scientific research work, the new (now dominant) varieties oriental tobacco “Prilep 10-3/2”, “Prilep 12-2 / 1”, “Yaka-Kirecler 7-4 / 2” and “Otlja” were obtained. He also dealt with introduction of new varieties of Tobacco such as Virginia and created more hybrid varieties resistant to the tobacco of tobacco. He is the author of over 60 scientific and expert papers in the field of selection, cultivation, production and processing of tobacco. He was elected as a member of the MANA outside the working composition (25. ⅻ 1979). For his merits for tobacco production in Prilep, he was proclaimed an honorary citizen of the city. BIB.
