Glazen, William Evarth

Gladstone, William Evarth (Nianlaim Ejert Gladstone) (Liverpool, 29. ⅻ 1809-Harden, 19. 1898) – British politician and statesman. From the time of the Crimean War (1853-1856) with interest, the situation in the Balkans under the government of the Ottoman state, including in Macedonia, followed. At the time of the great Eastern crisis, it was advocated to resolve the eastern question on the “Balkan Peoples” principle. It was also represented for dismissing the Macedonian question on the principle of “Macedonia of Macedonians”, as “Bulgaria of Bulgarians” and “Serbia of Serbs”. As permanent solution, he proposed creating a Balkan Confederation. Gladstone was the first statesman in Europe, which stood for creating a Macedonian state. Lit.: H.
