Xerxes and (Jierjes) – Persian king (486-465 Ex. HE), son and successor to King Dari, I. Immediately after entering the throne, military preparation started and active diplomatic activity for penetration in Helada. After ordering to build a bridge over Helespont, to cast a channel on the Athos peninsula and make bridges across the River Strimon, passing through Thrace and Macedonia, with a numerous army entered Helada. As a Persian vassal at the time of his campaign, the Macedonian Kingdom participated with military force within the Persian army. After the victory of Thermopiles, Xerxes devastated Attica, but suffered defeat in the Battle of Salamin.
