Universities in Macedonia

Universities in Macedonia – Higher education and scientific institutions with particular importance for Macedonian society, science, culture and arts. Their development begins after the liberation of Macedonia and the establishment of statehood. In Macedonia, 6 universities are working, four state and two private. State universities are: University “St. Cyril and Methodius “- Skopje (1946); University “St. Kliment Ohridski “- Bitola (1979), Tetovo State University – Tetovo (2004) and University” Goce Delchev “& Stip (2007); Private: South East European UniversityTetovo (2001) and European University “Republic of Macedonia” – Skopje (2005), and lately and more new private university institutions. The University consists of faculties and scientific institutions. In state universities, faculties and scientific institutes have the capacity of a legal entity, and in the private, legal entity is only the university. The managerial bodies of the University are: Senate, Rector’s Administration and Rector (with vovernors), and the faculty: teaching Council, Faculty Administration and Dean (with Procedure). State universities financially helps the state, while private are self-financing. At all universities, studies are organized on two levels: undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The undergraduate studies last from 3 to 5 (medicine 6) years and end up with the preparation of diploma work. The graduate are organized as specialist (1 year), a master’s (2 year) and doctoral (3 years) studies. University “St. Cyril and Methodius “is the first Macedonian university, founded in 1946. In Skopje, with the opening of (c.) The Faculty of Philosophy. It is formalized by law on the University of Skopje (1949), with which the previous relatively independent faculties: the Philosophical (1946), Agricultural and Forestry (1947) and Medical (1947) are united in a university as the “highest scientific-educational institution in the NRM”. By decision of the University Council (April 1969), the first Macedonian University receives the name University “Cyril and Methodius”, and with a new decision (November 1992) – today’s name University “St. Cyril and Methodius “- Skopje (c.). It is rapidly developing and becoming the center of the development of science, culture, arts and education of highly skilled personnel. The University is over 150 study programs in undergraduate studies, as well as a number of programs in postgraduate (specialist and master’s) studies. University “St. Kliment Ohridski “In Bitola was established in 1979. (The name receives in 1994). About 15,000 students study at this university. The State University of Tetovo has the next organizational structure: Natural and Mathematical Faculty, Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Center for Polytechnic Studies and Center for Studies for Higher Vocational Education for Nursing. Working since 1994, but officially recognized and reluctant in 2004. For the dispersion of higher education in the Republic of Macedonia in 2007 University “Goce Delcev” & Stip (c.) was formed. The private South East European University in Tetovo was established with the help of the international community in 2001. The University is a unitary institution with 5 faculties: legal, business administration, public administration, communication sciences and technologies and pedagogical faculty (faculty training teachers). Teaching is carried out in Albanian, in Macedonian and English. About 5,000 students study at this university. Private European University “Republic of Macedonia” in Skopje with accreditation for work gained 2005.
