Research Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology

Research Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGIB) – Science Unit of MANU, established in 1986. The center is the National Reference Laboratory for hemoglobinopathies formed in 1970. At the Children’s Disease Clinic. f. in Skopje, which since 1995 It is an international reference laboratory for hemoglobinopathies and international information center for human hemoglobin and its abnormalities (Ihitz). The main goal of ICGIB is the promotion of scientific knowledge in the field of protein chemistry, molecular medicine, genetic engineering and biotechnology, through scientific research, educational-practical courses for young scientific staff and postgraduate studies. ICGIB is located in the building of MANU, with a laboratory prosper, with its own library and modern and sophisticated equipment. 4-5 postgraduates are continuously staying in the Center. Scientists in the center worked on 26 scientific research projects in the field of molecular medicine (molecular characterization of the most common monogenic diseases, the molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases, the molecular grounds of the most common malignant diseases, DNA markers in human identification), genetic tests of the Ohrid trout, etc. The projects were funded mainly from international sources.
